Elizabeth (Besse) Saunders, the youngest daughter of Phillip Robert and Susan (Perkins) Saunders, was a stenographer from 1910 to 1927 working for a printing company. According to Carmen Saunders Sawyer, a cousin of Besse, she married a man named HARRIS who worked for the Education Department of New York State and was based mainly in Albany, the state capital.
She did indeed marry a James A. HARRIS in 1926 as her name disappears from the Rochester Directory of that year. The 1928/29 Directory shows Mr. & Mrs. James HARRIS living at 373 Troup Street. They lived there until James died on the 4th January 1957.
"HARRIS - On Friday, Jan. 4, 1957, James A. Harris of 373 Troup Street. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Harris, several nieces and nephews. Friends may call at the D.W.Mansell Funeral Home, 17 Phelps Ave., from 2-5 and 7-9 pm. Service Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Interment in Oakwood Cemetery, Penfield, N.Y., Rev. N. Johnson officiating."
The Historic Marriage Records of Rochester show that on the 28th March 1900 a James H. Harris, described as a 45 years old farmer born in Penfield, N.Y., married Anna M. Martin, a 41 year old born in Canada but living in Rochester. It is just possble that these could have been the parents of James A. Harris - with the Penfield connection - but this has not been proved.
By 1960 his widow is shown in the directory as Elizabeth HARRIS, widow of James A., (John Rogan Printing Co) living at 26 Portsmouth Terrace. The business directory for the same year has Rogan John Printing (Mrs. Eliz. S. HARRIS) 36 St. Paul St, Room 308. She appeared to have ran this firm of jobbing printers until about 1974 as the 1976 directory shows her as retired but still living at 26 Portsmouth Terrace. From the Social Security Index it would appear that she died in January 1982. If this is correct she had reached the good old age of nearly 96. They had no children.
There is no information as to where she was buried.
