James Hale
1788 - 1861

James Hale was one of twelve children of another James Hale and his wife, Ann Arnold who had married in St. Thomas's Church, Salisbury on the 6th January 1819. Ann was most probably the daughter of Henry Arnold and his wife, Elizabeth Hiscock, and born in Lockerly, Hampshire in about September 1804.

The children were all born and baptised in St. Michael and All Angels, Urchfont.

7. Elijah born about October 1833
8. Elisha born about July 1835
9. Julia born about February 1838

12. Rose Ellen born about Jube 1844

In the 1820's James was described as a 'carrier' but subsequently he always appeared as an 'agricultural labourer'.

Additional Information

1. Thomas married Elizabeth Noyes, born in Chirton, Wiltshire, in Urchfont on the 23rd November 1844. They had a daughter, Elizabeth, born on the 31st August 1853. Thomas worked as a gamekeeper in the Market Lavington area. He died in late 1895 aged 75.

2. William married Martha Lanham in Urchfont on the 16th October 1848. They had a son, William, born about 1849.
William worked as an agricultural labourer in the Market Lavington area.
Martha died in October 1875 aged53 and William in 1895 aged 77.

4.John married Ann Plank on the 20th April 1853. They had two children - Elizabeth (1854) and Simon(1856).
John work as an agricultral labourer in Urchfont.
Ann died in May 1857 aged 29 and John in about August 1887 aged 59.

5. Mary Ann - Nothing known.

6. Louisa married George Fricker in Urchfont on the 15th October 1855

7. Elijah - Nothing known.

8. Elisha died in Urchfont in September 1864 aged 29.

9. Julia married Henry Weston in Urchfont on the 22nd May 1858. They had four children - Daniel (1866); Caroline (1868); Harry (1870) and Fred (1872).
In 1881 the family were living at 10, Orange Grove, Devizes
Julia died in late 1909 aged 72 and Henry in the spring of 1912 aged 85.

10. Watson married Sarah Jane (maiden name unknown) in about 1867. The had six children - Tom (1868); Watson (1869); Louisa (C1874); Albert (1876); Martha Ellen (1879) and William (1884).
Watson worked as an agricultural labourer in Urchfont. He died in January 1920 aged 80. No record found of Sarah Jane's death.

11. Caroline married William Maslen/Maslin in Urchfont on the 13th October 1862. They had four children - Annie (C1867); Caroline (C1869); Mary (C1873) and Lily (1875).
William worked as an agricultural labourer in Urchfont.
Caroline died in 1915 aged 72 and William in 1919 aged 77.

12. Rose Ellen married James Tapper in Urchfont on the 17th December 1870. They had six children - Rose Ellen (1871); James (1873); William John (1875); Florence Daisy (1877); Annie Louisa (1879) and Maurice (1881).
All the children were born in Reading and in 1881 the family were at 19 Waterloo Road, Reading.
James died in 1926 aged 83 but no information on Rose Ellen
